The Colonies

Colony 1

STARDUST

Picture
StarDust was the first Sugar Glider and first Exotic we were asked to take in. A family reached out to us about her story. the home prior to the one contacting us kept StarDust in a cage barely 1' by 1' with no friends, no contact, no toys. For a Glider, this kind of environment is both mentally and physically detrimental. Her new owners rescued her from this, gave her a friend and larger cage with more toys. Unfortunately due to her previous neglect, StarDust was considered by her previous owners "feral." She would crab and bite and refused to bond. She loved her new sugar glider companion, but that companion unfortunately passed away unexpectedly. This left StarDust alone, depressed, and even less handleable. Her owners wanted her to be happy, and were worried for her health as she had started to become over weight. We promised to care for her and get her a friend, and so they brought StarDust to us with all of her things. StarDust is a very fearful girl, and often crabs a lot due to this fear. However she has created a bond with one of our Animal Care Technicians. She will take things for her, and she has never bitten her. She does not allow anyone to pet her or touch her, but she will sometimes crawl on our techs hands and give kisses.

The Trio

Picture
The trio came in together as a bonded colony. The colony is made up of two girls, Honey and Olive, and Mama's neutered son Nugget. We were asked to take them in due to their owners life changing. Their cage was being kept inside of a closet where they were getting little interaction. They were all starting to have over grooming issues because of this, so their owner thought it be best if they went to a sanctuary. Both of the girls are also very overweight, so much so that they cannot glide. We are transitioning them over to TPG in hopes that it will help with their weight problem.
After a few weeks of being beside Stardust and Spice, while swapping cages and toys/pouches, we introduced the Trio to our girls. It was instant acceptance. The trio, one by one, crawled into the pouch Spice and Stardust were inside, and they all fell asleep together. They have been one big happy colony of 5 ever since.

Cas

Picture
This handsome boy we have affectionately been calling Cas. He is a White Face Sugar glider.
His owner was starting to do more traveling and didn't feel they had proper time for him. He lost his bonded mate just prior to coming to us.
He has one calcified kidney and appears to be healthy other than some weight loss from losing his mate. He should be around a long time, but because of his medical condition we have decided to make him a permanent member.
We wanted him to bond with Darling, but he was adamant about being with the colony of 5. He was so persistent we decided to give it a try. They were all happy to have another friend. We let him move in and they have since been a colony of 6.

Darling

Picture
This is Darling, she is one of three of our most recent rescues. She lives up to her name and is quite the little sweetheart, despite her heart breaking past.
Darling had a bonded mate whom she had several sets of joeys with. Her previous owner sold her mate without her, and then put her in the same cage as her 7 intact, sexually mature male joeys. She is underweight, has over grooming around her face and toes, is horribly stained from bad diet, and has climbing issues from malnutrition. She appears to have beginning signs of Metabolic Bone Disease due to issues with her back legs. If we had gotten her any later it is very possible she would have soon suffered from back leg paralysis. As much as we dislike it, Darling is currently living in a very large bin with lots of fleece and pouches (and of course tons of air holes). We currently do not feel it is safe for her to be in any kind of cage that has wire or sides she can climb on for risk of her falling. We are very hopeful in time her condition will improve and she can be moved into a much larger cage. She is taken out daily for enrichment and exercise and to monitor her progress. So far she continues to steadily get better.

Batty and Petri

Picture
Picture
Batty and Petri are two of our most recently rescued trio. They are two intact males that came in with their mom, who has been separated from them until they can be neutered.
They came in skinny, horribly stained, and with Petri refusing to do much climbing due to being so weak. They had lived in a decent sized cage, but there were 8 other gliders living in it, with very few pouches or toys. They were interacted with very little, but are somehow so sweet.
We immediately put them on our diet that includes high calcium vitamins. Petri perked up within a couple days and is now climbing and not having any difficulties!
